D2D System Upgrade and Tandem Crane Integration at Black Point Power Station





Starting in 2026, SKYTRAIN (Hong Kong) Professional Services, together with Konecranes and with the strategic support of CLP, undertook a highly specialised crane modernisation and integration project at Black Point Power Station in Hong Kong.
The project represented an important milestone for SKYTRAIN HK Pro as our company’s first involvement in a technically demanding tandem gantry crane integration and commissioning operation of this scale. Beyond the successful completion of the work itself, the project also demonstrated our capability to collaborate effectively with international crane manufacturers, technical specialists, and critical infrastructure operators under extremely demanding operational and safety requirements.
The project focused on upgrading and commissioning the D2D communication and control systems associated with the overhead travelling cranes at Unit D1. The works formed a critical part of the preparation for integrated tandem lifting operations involving extremely heavy equipment handling within the power station.
One of the major challenges was that tandem crane operations of this nature had not been carried out at the facility for approximately eight years. Re-establishing reliable synchronised crane operation required extensive engineering coordination, system integration, inspection, calibration, and commissioning activities to ensure both cranes could safely operate together under strict operational tolerances.
The project involved upgrading communication systems, integrating inverter interfaces, installing new control components, configuring operational logic, and carrying out detailed testing and commissioning activities across the crane systems. Because the cranes would eventually be required to lift a generator weighing nearly 480 tons, the entire operation adopted a strict zero-tolerance approach toward operational errors.
From the earliest stages of the project, detailed discussions and technical coordination between SKYTRAIN HK Pro, Konecranes engineers, suppliers, and site representatives were carried out extensively. Due to the complexity of the integration works, these discussions became an exceptional example of collaborative engineering coordination between all involved parties.
Every operational sequence, communication interface, inverter parameter arrangement, and safety interlock logic was carefully reviewed before installation activities commenced. Particular attention was given to synchronisation reliability, communication stability, lifting safety, and contingency planning.
To ensure the highest technical standards were achieved, field support from Konecranes engineers was requested during key installation and commissioning activities. Their involvement provided additional technical assurance and strengthened the overall coordination between equipment supplier expertise and local site execution.
Preparation played a major role in minimising project risks and reducing commissioning downtime. Communication connectors, HMI systems, inverter integration arrangements, and cable routing details were reviewed and prepared prior to site mobilisation. Several components were pre-programmed, assembled, and tested before delivery to site to improve installation efficiency and reduce commissioning uncertainties.
During installation activities, upgraded D2D communication infrastructure and control interfaces were integrated into the crane systems. The works involved the main hoist, long travel, and cross travel systems, all of which required reliable inverter communication and synchronised operational performance to support future tandem lifting operations.
New communication cables were installed throughout the crane structure using protective conduits to ensure long-term durability within the demanding industrial environment. Particular attention was given to cable termination quality, communication integrity, and future maintainability of the installed systems.
An important feature of the project was the close collaboration between local field technicians and remote engineering support teams. Through internet-based remote access and technical coordination, inverter settings, communication parameters, and operational performance could be reviewed and verified in real time. This collaborative approach allowed commissioning activities to proceed efficiently while maintaining strict technical and safety standards.
Following installation, a comprehensive testing and commissioning programme was carried out. The scope included:

Inspection, testing, and calibration activities were conducted according to the highest standards because of the critical lifting requirements involved. Every stage of the commissioning process underwent careful review to ensure the cranes could safely perform synchronised operations under demanding load conditions.
In addition to the upgrade works, SKYTRAIN HK Pro also identified several early signs of aging within the crane inverter systems during site inspections. Rather than limiting our work strictly to the original project scope, we provided preventive maintenance observations and recommendations aimed at supporting the client’s long-term reliability strategy and minimising future downtime risks.
The project ultimately culminated in the successful lifting of the nearly 480-ton generator using the integrated tandem crane system. The successful operation represented an immense source of pride and achievement for all parties involved and demonstrated the effectiveness of disciplined engineering preparation, technical collaboration, and uncompromising attention to safety and operational reliability.
